The black swan (Cygnus atratus) is a large waterbird, a species of swan, which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. The species was hunted to extinction in New Zealand, but later reintroduced.
It is a large bird with mostly black plumage and red eyes. In flight, it shows a prominent white patch on the wings. The bill is a striking red with a white tip.
"All swans are white" was a common example of a universal truth until black swans were discovered in Australia, changing our understanding forever.
